World MS Day, May 30th 2022
Adam Doyle (Physiotherapist – Burnie)
Today is World MS (Multiple Sclerosis) Day!
MS is a neurological condition that affects the brain, optic nerves and spinal cord causing a range of symptoms such as problems with balance, vision, and muscle control. (https://www.awarenessdays.com/awareness-days-calendar/world-ms-day-2022/)
The theme for World MS Day (2020 to 2023) is ‘Connections’; connecting those with the disease but also those without, and ensuring holistic and well-rounded healthcare, based on education and the removal of stigmas attached.
Today, 2.8 million people around the world have MS making it one of the most common diseases of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). Symptoms can include blurred vision, weak limbs, tingling sensations, balance loss, memory problems, and fatigue. This covers a range of body systems including the muscles, the lungs/heart and the brain.
Exercise and MS: A match made in heaven!
Exercise is considered as a safe, effective means of rehabilitation, which benefits mood and quality of life (Halabchi, Alizadeh, Sahraian & Abolhasani, 2017). Client specific exercise is important to maintaining body systems as effectively as possible. A tailored exercise program to suit someone with MS is important for maintaining their quality of life.
Whether it be resistance training for bone/muscle mass, balance, and coordination, exercises to reduce risk of falls, breathing exercises and aerobic activity for your fatigue or breathlessness, Physio and Exercise Physiologists here at Coastal Physiotherapy can help!
If you or someone you know is suffering from MS, it is advisable to get in touch with a health professional for guidance on what a suitable exercise regime may look like for them.
For an appointment with either our Physiotherapists or Exercise Physiologists, you can call our Burnie clinic directly on 64314586.
